Demopolisium is an interactive project at the intersection of Sociology and Media Art that offers a closer look at the relation between private actions and generalized social structures. Based on creative questioning and on unique (but not personalized) data, the program generates graphic representation of social structure for each participant and collects a dataset for subsequent regional analysis. The word “Demopolisium” refers to greek vocabulary ( δῆμος “people,” πόλις “city”) as ancient Greece is believed to be the origin of democratic practices and to latin botany terms that hint towards the plant growing metaphor used in visualization. Inspired by Deleuze’s and Guattari’s rhizomatic structures used to describe networks formed by human actions, Demopolisium suggests a plant-like representation of respondents’ inner values in a spector between liberal or conservative views. The chosen ratio affects the “sustainability” and “flowering” of the generative structure. More growing branches and blooming for those who choose diversity and mutual aid contrariwise more rooting and grounding for adherents of determinism and autonomy. The questions at the survey are formulated intuitively and almost poetically as a scale or continuum between two concepts, such as: “free will – determinism”, “planet – homeland”, “sufficiency – interaction” and “diversity- uniform”.
