For the #vanlife project, I snuck into the vanlife community on Instagram and immersed myself in a world of happiness and beauty. I built an RV out of an old VW van, drew a nuclear bomb on it and now I’m traveling our pre-apocalyptic world. As I struggle through dying forests, poisoned rivers and the unyielding EU borders, I post images of conflict and devastation garnished with naïve and cynical comments. Ok, I admit it’s all Photoshop, but just as fake as the carefree life that travel influencers show us 😉 In this world we’ve screwed up, escapism is an understandable need, but a dangerous move…

The purpose of many people using the same name is to create a body of art for which nobody in particular is responsible and to reframe identity, individuality, originality, value and truth. Anyone can become Karen Eliot simply by adopting the name. Karen Eliot was not born, s/he was materialised from social forces, constructed as a means of entering the shifting terrain that circumscribes the ‘individual’ and society.
