Scholarly Stanzas

2023

The songbook “Scholarly Stanzas” is a bridge, a path, to teach students about Communication Theories. In the social sciences, theories reliably and demonstrably explain social phenomena. For an idea to be considered a theory, it has to be verified through multiple academic studies. So just the gathering of this knowledge in one place has high pedagogical value. The songbook opens these theories and displays them in a more everyday context than that provided by academic documents. Songs do not involve sampling methods, research methods, statistics, or bibliography. Songs mostly talk about the human experience of theories, how they occur day to day, how to learn from them. Underneath the verses, there are multiple bibliographic resources that directly link the song with the most important studies of each theory, from academic articles and books to information on the Internet. The content of “Scholarly Stanzas” was created with artificial intelligence and required arduous controlled content generation, careful verification of said content, writing dozens of Python programs, and consolidating everything (a quarter of a million words, more than 7,000 images, more than 500 theories/songs) into a graphical interface on the web.
