I Have Everything I Need, No. 8 (from Affirmation Ads)

2023

I started noticing in myself how I didn’t feel good after using Facebook or Instagram… Worse still, the same advertisement seemingly follows us around the internet like a recurring nightmare. Research has shown the negative impact of social media for a year. It is unlikely that the companies, governments or regulations will act on it. “Affirmation Ads” aims to find a middle ground between embracing and withdrawing from social media. It takes the power from advertisers and big tech companies, and places it back in your hands by installing a positive artwork throughout your digital life. Instead of relying on someone else to fix it for us, these artworks allow each of us to do something about it right now. The project uses positive artworks that allow users to take control of Facebook Pixel, related code, and tracking technology. By selecting a piece that resonates with them, users can “install” it on their digital platforms, transforming their Instagram feed into a personal sanctuary that reflects their true selves. The “Affirmation Ads” are figurative drawings on paper, collaged with pink press-on acrylic nails. They recreate Instagram advertisements with the affirmation “I have everything I need”. “Affirmation Ads” redefines art and technology, reaching thousands with positive messages, making it a unique contribution to the Net art open call.
